Erie Intermodal Transportation Center
Erie, PA
There are many elements with the Erie Intermodal Transportation Center project that made this structure unique and worthy of consideration for the Sarnafil Project of the Year Award for 2002.
A standing seam metal roof system was originally considered for the project. The building design was well suited for the aesthetics of standing seam metal and a standing seam metal system was part of the preliminary design. The project architects, Roth Marz Partnership had some concerns about the installation of a metal roof on the project. The architect anticipated that the building design, in two domes, one barrel, two flat roofs and 2 cupola’s would drive the cost of the standing seam system over budget. In addition the high winds on the Lake Erie bay front, combined with winter weather would make the standing seam roof system difficult to install.
After researching Sarnafil and their products, and being satisfied and comfortable with the results, Roth Marz consulted with the local Sarnafil representative and John Farrell to develop a specification for a Sarnafil Adhered Décor system. The assembly would use two layers of mechanically attached Sarnatherm insulation with an adhered G410 membrane, Décor profiles and a snow guard system. The decking system was installed and the building ready to be roofed in November of 2001. The insulation and membrane layout configuration were critical to the appearance and performance of the system. AW Farrell’s foremen on the projects, Randy Pace and Sean Fennick worked with the local Sarnafil technical representative, Ron Clark to work out the details of the insulation placement and attachment along with the details of the G410 membrane installation. Erie’s winter set in just as the project started. While the wind and weather provided additional challenges, the crew installed a roof system that can be considered a “show piece”. The final components of the project; installation of the décor profiles and Alpine snow guards were installed when the weather was more conducive to the final, critical details.
It is important to note that the roof on this project has generated a considerable amount of interest in Erie from both the public and those involved in the building design and construction field. All parties involved anticipated that this Sarnafil installation by AW Farrell will lead to additional opportunities for A.W. Farrell and Sarnafil.
